Born Roscommon September 1947. Married to Elizabeth Walsh with two sons and two daughters. Educated Feevagh National School: Summerhill College, Sligo and then at Dublin Health Authority. Former Health Board Officer. Former Senator 1989-2002. Vice-chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance and Public Service. Member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social and Family Affairs. Convenor of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Strategic Management Initiative.

May 2008 - Appointed Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (with special responsibility for Housing, Urban Renewal and Developing Areas).
