Gormley announces public consultation on Election Posters

23/07/08

Mr. John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, today (23 July 2008) announced the launch of a public consultation process on the subject of election and referendum posters.

At present, election and referendum posters are exempt from the provisions of the Litter Pollution Acts until 7 days after polling day.  Increasingly, concerns have been raised by local authorities and the general public about the proliferation of posters, their use in unsuitable locations, and the failure to remove posters, including poster ties, within the statutory 7 day period.

A full copy of the Public Notice is available on www.environ.ie.  This highlights recent issues of concern, some possible amendments to existing legislation, which could be considered, and the potential for measures to be included in any new regime.  In summary, options include: restricting the locations in which posters can be displayed; introduction of a code of practice or guidelines with which the use of election posters must comply; and powers for local authorities to introduce bye-laws for election posters appropriate to their local circumstances.

"This is an opportunity for all concerned with this issue to make their views known.  I will consider all comments carefully before finalising my proposals and bringing these to the Government in due course" said the Minister

Submissions are invited from all interested individuals and organisations by 15 September 2008, either by email to electionposters@environ.ie or by post to Election Poster Consultation, Environment Policy Section, Department of Environment, Heritage & Local Government, Ardcavan Business Park, Wexford Town, Co. Wexford.
