Minister Gormley officially launches the Local Elections Exhibition

04/11/08

Mr John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government today (3rd November) officially launched the Local Elections Exhibition at Fingal County Hall, Swords, Co. Dublin.

The Local Authority Archivists’ Group in association with the Heritage Council have created a joint exhibition on local elections. The exhibition, which focuses on elections in Ireland, starting with the first election in 1899, is produced on a series of panels using images from local authority archives across the country.

The exhibition will travel to local authorities across the country and local authority archivists will provide a display of local archives to accompany these panels to give local people, local schools and local councillors the opportunity to assess the effect of local government in their community since the first local election in 1899.

The Minister stated that the exhibition serves “to remind the electorate that the right to vote is an important entitlement”. It is hoped that as the exhibition travels across the country that it will heighten voters awareness of the purpose and goals of local elections and the impact that local government has on our communities.
