Licensing of Goods Trailers over 3,500GVW


New or imported trailers and semi-trailers over 3,500 kg laden weight(equivalent to 11/2 tons unladen weight ) used for the carriage of goods are required to be licensed by the motor tax office. The requirement does not apply to agriculture trailers (i.e. trailers the property of persons engaged in agriculture which are designed and used primarily for work on the land and which are used on a public road only incidentally to such work).Trailers used by the Defence Forces/Garda Siochana are also excluded. The period of the licence is twelve months.

 First Licensing.

For first licensing the following will be required.

  • Application form TF100
  • Identification certificate TF300
  • Fee of €60

Renewal of Licence.

For renewing the licence the following will be required.

  • Application form TF100
  • Licence card TF5
  • Certificate of roadworthiness
  • Identification certificate TF300, if trailer weight changed since last licensing
  • No fee

 Change of Particulars including address.

For notifying a change of particulars the following will be required.

  • Application form TF100
  • Licence card TF5

 Sale of Trailer.

For notifying the sale of a trailer the following will be required.

  • Notification of transfer form TF200
  • Licence card TF5 submitted by the new owner

 Trailer scrapped/destroyed/exported.

The following is required.

  • Notify motor tax office in writing, and
  • Surrender Licence card TF5

 Replacement trailer licensing card TF5.

The following is required.

  • Application form RF134
  • Fee of €6
