Sectoral Plan of the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government

The Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government´s sectoral plan, which was approved by the Oireachtas on October 18th 2006, aims to promote and encourage equal opportunities for people with disabilities to take part in the economic, social and cultural life of the community.

The plan outlines the steps to be taken in relation to the improved provision of services to persons with disabilities by the Department and local authorities and sets out national objectives and guidelines for access to services and built facilities. The plan also includes measures to be taken in the areas of the Building and Planning Codes, Heritage Sites, Public Bodies under the Department´s aegis and Arrangements for Resourcing, Monitoring, Review and Reporting.

It is intended that the plan, developed with people with disabilities, will help the Department and local authorities by providing a clearer structure to deliver a society with accessible buildings, facilities, services and information for all.

Supporting Accessibility in Local Authorities


A website has been developed by the LGMSB, LGCSB and the Department - Local Authority Accessibility website (external link) to help develop capacity in local authorities for implementing the National Disability Strategy, by showcasing good practice in accessibility in local authorities and provifing practical answers to questions relevant to local authorities.
