Grant offers totalling €1.38m under the Civic Structures Conservation Grants Scheme 2010 announced by Minister Gormley

28/04/10

Mr. John Gormley, T.D. Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, today  (28 April 2010) announced grant offers totalling €1.38m for conservation works to 86 heritage properties around the country under the Civic Structures Conservation Grants Scheme, 2010.

The scheme will ensure the continued preservation of heritage structures, such as libraries, churches, harbours and gate lodges, which are in civic ownership or occupation and open to the public to enjoy.  The Minister commented that he is pleased to be in a position to show continued support in 2010 for this grant scheme which will have direct benefits for the local communities involved.

He said “I commend the local community based organisations for their excellent work in preserving their local heritage and as such I am delighted to be able to support them in their endeavours. I would also encourage other communities to identify and promote conservation projects in their areas.” The Minister noted the excellent quality of applications this year and also wished to express his thanks to the Independent Expert Panel that assessed the applications.

The attached table lists the grants awarded under the scheme. Among the heritage properties being offered funding under the scheme are the Shannonbridge Napoleonic Fortifications, Christchurch Cathedral and St. Colman’s Cathedral.
