GORMLEY LAUNCHES “LIME WORKS - using lime in traditional & new buildings”

26/04/10

Mr. John Gormley T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government today (26 April) officially launched a new publication by The Building Limes Forum Ireland entitled LIME WORKS using lime in traditional & new buildings.

This book is a very important addition to the suite of reference material available to building owners, practitioners and specifiers when considering best practice in the conservation of historic structures.

Officially launching the book in the Custom House, Minister Gormley said “Lime Works provides easy-to-read, easy-to-understand and easy-to-use information on the many uses of lime in building, including in the repair of historic structures and in new buildings.”

The Minister also highlighted that “the use of lime has ecological benefits, not least of which is that the gentle binding properties of lime enable full re-use of other materials”. He also referred to the successful use of lime in structures such as the Pantheon in Rome and in the Custom House itself.

Lime Works complements the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government’s Advice Series currently covering guidance on general maintenance of older buildings, repair of historic windows, wrought and cast ironwork, and brickwork. The Department intends to add further to this Advice Series later this year.

Further information about Lime Works is available from www.buildinglimesforumireland.com.
