Awareness Campaigns

National Monuments Service is engaged in a number of campaigns to increase the awareness of Irelands rich archaeological heritage. To date this has included the publication of various booklets such as Irish Fields Monuments booklet, Earthen Banks and Broken Walls, Good Farming Practice and Archaeology, The Care and Conservation of Graveyards, Policy and Guidelines on Archaeological Excavations, Framework and Principles for the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage.

In 2005 the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, in co-operation with Limerick Education Centre, launched a resource pack 'Archaeology in the Classroom - Its about Time' (available to download at www.itsabouttime.ie) which is designed to use archaeology as a theme in teaching the Social, Environmental and Scientific Education curriculum in primary schools in an integrated manner. 'Time in Transition' is a multimedia resource pack designed especially for Transition Year students. The pack places a strong emphasis on local studies and is divided into three themes Worship and Commemoration, Lifestyles and Living and Archaeology at Work. Developed in co-operation with Limerick Education Centre, it will be available in schools from early 2009. Archaeology is a very practical subject and pupils of all ages and abilities readily engage with its hands on activity-based structure.
