Retailer Obligations

A retailer selling electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) which come under the remit of the WEEE Regulations must;

  • be registered with their local authority (retailers must re-register annually);
  • provide for free in-store take back of household WEEE on a one-for-one basis on the sale of a new like product;
  • ensure that any WEEE collected is delivered to an approved collection facility;
  • ensure that the storage and transport of WEEE collected as above meets the requirements of the Regulations; and
  • ensure that private households are informed of the WEEE take back facilities available to them and that they are encouraged to participate in the separate collection of WEEE.

See WEEE and the Retailer for further information.

Any retailer who sells EEE placed on the market by an unregistered producer takes on all producer, including financial, obligations.  In order to ensure that EEE is being supplied by compliant producers, retailers should ensure that the supplier displays his or her registration number on all invoices, delivery dockets etc.  A retailer can verify that the producer supplying him or her is registered by accessing the WEEE Register Website.
