Litter Pollution

The Litter Pollution Acts 1997 to 2009 provide the statutory framework to combat the litter problem.  Under the acts, the primary management and enforcement responses to litter must come from the local authorities; it is a matter for each authority to investigate individual instances of littering and to take the appropriate enforcement and clean up actions. The Gardai also have an enforcement role. Local authorities are responsible for keeping public places, including public roads, clear of litter, as far as is practicably possible. This includes the arrangement of cleaning programmes and the provision and emptying of litter bins.
