Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland

The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII) is the national organisation with regulatory, monitoring and advisory responsibilities in matters pertaining to ionising radiation. In particular the RPII concerns itself with hazards to health associated with ionising radiation and with radioactive contamination in the environment.

The RPII was established in 1992 under the Radiological Protection Act, 1991.

The RPII assists the Department of the Environment by providing the Nuclear Safety Section with scientific advice on all matters relating to radiological safety.

The RPII also undertakes research in relation to such matters. It also operates an extensive monitoring function in relation to the presence and origin of radioactivity in the environment and regulates the provision, use and disposal of radioactive substances employed in the health sector,  industry and education.
