European Union Regulation for Chemical Safety
The Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government participated with the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Innovation (external link) and other appropriate Government Departments and Agencies in the discussions and negotiations at E.U level for the development of the E.Us REACH Chemicals Regulation. REACH is a new single European Regulation replacing many existing pieces of chemical legislation and is an acronym for Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals. The E.U level negotiations were finalised in 2006 and the new Regulation's provisions will commence operation in June 2007.
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) (external link) has been appointed as the Competent Authority for REACH in Ireland and more information on the Regulation and its implementation can be accessed at their REACH website (external link)
