Review of National Climate Policy
The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government asked his Department to carry out a review of National Climate Policy to establish –
- the progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in recent years, and
- the challenges that lie ahead in the post-2012 period.
Ireland is demonstrating its commitment to the EU and wider international climate protection agenda by ensuring that compliance with current greenhouse gas mitigation target for the purposes of the Kyoto Protocol. Beyond 2012, Ireland has clear and challenging mitigation targets for the 2013-2020 period, which are binding under EU law and which must be addressed in the longer-term context of transition to a competitive, low-carbon economy.
The review aims to set the contextual foundation for the development of future climate policy and to stimulate constructive debate in that regard.
