Irish Minister addresses UNECE Forum on energy efficiency in housing

23/11/09

Mr Michael Finneran, T.D., Ireland’s Minister for Housing and Local Services today (23rd November,2009)  addressed the UNECE’S International Forum on energy efficiency in the housing sector, held in the City Hall in Vienna.

Commenting on the main focus of the Forum – the UNECE’s  Draft Action Plan on energy efficiency in housing, the Minister welcomed the policy areas and goals set out in the Draft Plan while noting also that it recognised the diversity of the UNECE region which was an important principle he was glad to see included. He also outlined actions being taken by Ireland to improve  energy efficiency in it’s new and existing housing stock and  remarked that many of these were reflected in the policy areas and goals contained in the Draft Action Plan.

Concluding his address to the delegates the Minister said he would be preaching to the converted if he were “to emphasise the importance of the issues you will be discussing here over the next few days.  So let me just urge you to use very wisely the opportunity of having so many of the converted present in the one place.  The issues involved are challenging and the need to address them in a comprehensive manner is crucial.”
